Nearly 9,000 casualties and fatalities were recorded in road accidents this year

The number of accidents caused by children increased by 1.4 times

Nearly 6,500 road accidents with casualties were recorded in Ukraine in the first four months of 2024 according to the Department of Patrol Police (DPP). This is 6% more than the same period in 2023. Among these accidents, 813 people died. Additionally, the number of accidents caused by children increased significantly by 1.4 times this year. The majority of such accidents occurred in the Lviv region.

Overall, 6,475 road accidents with casualties were recorded in Ukraine in the first four months of 2024. This is an 8% increase compared to before the full-scale war.

The number of fatalities in such accidents reached 813 people this year, with 8155 injured.

For the second consecutive year, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast tops the list of regions with the highest number of road accidents with casualties. There were 637 such cases, accounting for 10% of the total nationwide. The number of accidents here increased by 14.5% compared to the same period last year.

Lviv Oblast ranks second with 586 road accidents with casualties (9%), followed by Kyiv, which closes the top three with 534 incidents (8%).

The largest increase in road accidents with casualties over the year was recorded in Kherson (+26%), Mykolaiv (+23%), and Rivne Oblasts (+23%).

The majority of fatalities, accounting for 70% of the total, occurred in accidents due to speeding (430) and violations of maneuvering rules (136).

It’s worth noting that the number of accidents involving children is increasing year by year. For instance, 956 such accidents occurred in the first four months of 2024 — nearly a quarter more than in the same period last year. The highest number of these accidents was recorded in Lviv Oblast — 115 cases.

The number of accidents involving children’s fault has increased 1.4 times this year compared to last year and 3 times compared to 2021. The highest number of such cases occurred in Lviv Oblast (21), Rivne Oblast (14), Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (13), and Volyn Oblast (12).
