They registered a record number of domestic violence cases in 2024

How many of these cases make it to court?

In January 2024, a record number of criminal investigations into domestic violence were registered — 435. That’s almost twice as many as last January. According to the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine, over 80% of open cases go to court.

The number of domestic violence cases increases year by year, with the first year of the full-scale invasion being the only exception. Last year, Ukraine registered 2,705 such criminal investigations. That’s 11% more than in 2021 — 2,432 cases.

A record number of new cases of domestic violence were recorded in January 2024 — 435 in one month. This is already 55% more than in January 2023, when 280 such cases were registered.

Last year, on average, 225 criminal investigations into domestic violence were opened per month. For comparison, in the COVID-19 year of 2020, there were 184 such cases, and in 2021, there were 202 investigations per month.

In total, 10,351 cases of domestic violence have been recorded in Ukraine over the past 5 years.

Approximately 80% of the total number of open cases of domestic violence go to court annually.

It is worth noting that Article 126-1 on domestic violence was first introduced into the Criminal Code of Ukraine in December 2017 and came into force in January 2019. The first cases in the Prosecutor General’s reports appeared as early as April 2019.
