Overall Mortality Fell by 14% in June with COVID-19 Mortality Decreasing Almost Fourfold

How many Ukrainians have already received the COVID-19 vaccine?

26 August 2021

In June, 49,077 people died from various diseases in Ukraine, which was 14% less than in May when 57,293 deaths occurred.

For comparison, overall mortality stood at 43,396 people in June 2020.

We saw a decrease in mortality from half of the most common causes, including respiratory diseases. COVID-19 figures, which surged at the start of spring and halved in May, continue to decrease. 1,762 deaths from COVID-19 is almost 4 times less than a month before—when 6,327 deaths occurred—and the lowest number this year.

Nearly every eighth Ukrainian has been partially or fully vaccinated from COVID-19. In total, 5,108,074 people have been vaccinated, out of which more than a half—3,192,128—have received two doses.

Over the first half of 2021, various diseases caused 349,041 deaths in Ukraine in total—21.5% more than in the same period of 2020 when 287,010 people died.

Mortality data is a crucial tool for decision-makers on the national and community level. Unfortunately, the data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine is still almost two months behind, so we cannot realistically estimate the mortality rate in Ukraine right now.
