What is the average lifespan of a Ukrainian business?

More than 11,000 companies stopped operating in the first 11 months of 2025, according to the Unified State Register. One third of all closures happened in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk region, and Lviv region. Public organizations turned out to be the most vulnerable. Companies in education, healthcare, and veterinary services stayed on the market the longest.
11,223 companies closed in Ukraine this year. The biggest spike in closures happened in September, when 1,464 businesses stopped operating at the same time.
If we look at the average lifespan of businesses by legal form, the most sustainable were joint-stock companies — the average age of companies closed this year was 28 years and 7 months. They are followed by local self-government bodies — 27 years and 10 months, and state-owned enterprises — 26 years and 7 months.
The shortest lifespan was seen among charitable organizations — 5 years, service cooperatives — 7 years and 5 months, and LLCs — 8.5 years on average.
Companies most often closed in Kyiv — 1,289 closures, or 12% of the total. Next are Dnipropetrovsk region (824 closures), Lviv region (772), Odesa region (738), and Kyiv region (589).
By number, the most vulnerable this year were non-governmental organizations (NGOs) — 1,498 closures. The average lifespan of an NGO in Ukraine is 11 years. It is worth noting that we previously reported problems with reporting in this sector: this year 89% of NGOs did not submit their annual financial reports. Large losses were also seen in wholesale trade (1,001 companies), education (981), public administration and defense (966), and agriculture (794).

The average lifespan of companies that ceased operations this year varies significantly. Businesses in the education sector lasted the longest — 23 years and 10 months, followed by healthcare — 23 years and 7 months, and veterinary services — over 22 years. The “youngest” among those most frequently closed this year were companies in the IT sector and security services, where the average age was around 5 years.
