Three deaths for every newborn

Mortality decreased by 2% over the year

More than 168.7 thousand children were born in Ukraine in 2025, according to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. At the same time, 485.2 thousand deaths were recorded. Overall, for every newborn last year there were three deaths. Over the year, mortality in Ukraine decreased by 2%, while birth rates fell by 4.5%.

168,778 newborns were recorded in Ukraine last year. After the crisis year of 2022, when the birth rate fell by 25%, the decline has been gradually slowing: it amounted to 6% in 2024 and 4.5% in 2025. It is worth noting that even before the full-scale invasion, year-to-year birth rates were decreasing by an average of 8%. However, compared to 2021, the difference remains significant — 1.6 times fewer children are being born.

However, there are regions where the number of newborns has increased. In Lviv region, the birth rate grew by 1.5%, which is 230 more babies than in 2024. In Volyn region, the increase was 0.6%, or 44 children.

Apart from areas of active hostilities, the sharpest decline in births is seen in frontline regions. In Kherson region, the indicator dropped by 16%, and in Zaporizhzhia region — by 11%. The number of newborns decreased by 9% in Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv regions, as well as in Chernivtsi region, which is far from the combat zone.

Traditionally, the largest number of children were born in Kyiv — 19,410 newborns, or 11.5% of the total. At the same time, the capital lost only 1.5% compared to 2024. Lviv region ranks second with 15,872 babies, and Dnipropetrovsk region is third with 12,754 children.

485,296 deaths were recorded in Ukraine in 2025. Overall, the death rate decreased by 2% nationwide. At present, there are three deaths for every one newborn.

The highest number of deaths was recorded in Dnipropetrovsk region (52,559), Kyiv (36,296), and Kharkiv region (34,670).

However, trends differ by region. The number of deaths decreased by 4% in Poltava and Rivne regions. At the same time, mortality increased in six regions, with the largest rise in Kyiv, where the figure grew by 2%. Increases were also recorded in Chernivtsi (+1.6%), Cherkasy (+1%), Ivano-Frankivsk (+0.9%), Ternopil (+0.6%), and Lviv (+0.4%) regions.
